It’s safe to say that we all know that we need to wash our clothes to get rid of the bacteria that we have collected during the day. Did you know? Bacteria can survive at room temperature longest on polyester up to 206 days! And some other species can survive up to 90 days on cotton and mixed fibers. Even the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) guidelines also note that the virus may remain viable for hours to days on surfaces made from a variety of materials, including clothing. So, it is vital for us to always make time for laundry day.
Though, there are certain things that we all need to remember to make sure that all the dirt and bacteria have all been eradicated. Below, we have prepared 4 points you need to know when washing your dirty clothes!
1. Identify the material of your clothes
According to the American Cleaning Institute, here are the different materials of clothing along with when you should wash them:
2. Water temperature
When washing our clothes, it is better if we also pay attention to the water temperature since it’ll have an impact on the level of cleanliness of our clothes. Hot water works better in effectively getting rid of the bacteria and viruses collected during the day. Although do mind that hot water can easily make the colors of your clothes fade away. You can also use cold water but remember to use a disinfectant liquid to kill all the germs.
3. Detergent Type
Most detergents products may contain chemicals that are equally capable of removing stains on clothes. But what about bacteria and germs on clothes? In fact, there are two types of detergents for washing clothes that you can use. The first is a non-biological detergent that contains bleach for cleaning and contains a disinfectant. Meanwhile, other detergents are biological detergents that depend on enzymes which are considered not as efficient to kill germs.
4. Don’t forget to also wash your washing machine!
This is a really important point for us to also be mindful of the cleanliness of our washing machine. The germs from your clothes may stay in your washing machine and spread to your next load of laundry. It is actually one of the places where germs can easily breed. If water pools in your machine between loads, germs may breed there, too. Try to clean your washing machine about once a month. Run the machine with nothing in it but chlorine bleach. If your next load of laundry is colored, run the machine empty again, this time with nothing but water, so any leftover bleach won’t ruin your colored clothes.
